Water's Edge

Water's Edge was inspired by a quiet October morning along the Lake Michigan shoreline just north of Grand Haven, Michigan.

Record-high water levels had dramatically reshaped the coast, creating steep sand bluffs, exposed tree roots and a shoreline that was constantly changing. While exploring the area with my camera, one graceful tree overlooking Lake Michigan caught my attention.

Its quiet strength and elegant form became the inspiration for this painting.

Rather than focusing on the erosion surrounding it, I chose to celebrate what remained — strength, resilience and the timeless beauty of Michigan's shoreline.

Painted in Christi Dreese's contemporary impressionist style, expressive brushstrokes and glimpses of dark underpainting create movement, texture and depth throughout the landscape.

Water's Edge captures a peaceful moment along Lake Michigan and the beauty that can still be found within a changing landscape.
