The shoreline has a way of calling you back.
The Shores of Lake Michigan captures that wide, open feeling of standing at the water’s edge — where the lake stretches endlessly and the sky meets it in a wash of soft light. Painted with Christi Dreese’s expressive contemporary impressionist brushwork, this piece brings the calm and quiet grandeur of Lake Michigan into any space it inhabits.
At 24”×24”, this intimate square original works beautifully in a bedroom, hallway, or reading nook — anywhere that deserves a connection to the water.
Studio Story
The Shores of Lake Michigan was inspired by a view I’ve come to love from the water.
I often bring my camera along when I’m out on the boat, and as we make our way toward Muskegon, I find myself photographing the shoreline again and again. From the lake, the landscape looks completely different—the blue water stretches out in front of you, the dunes rise behind it, and the trees create these beautiful bands of green along the shore.
Every so often, a house appears through the trees, looking almost tiny against the scale of the dunes and Lake Michigan.
I love that perspective. It reminds me just how expansive the lake feels, and how quietly the homes and cottages seem to settle into the landscape.
This painting is one of my favorites because it captures that view from the water—the shoreline as I experience it from the boat.
