Begin by assembling the stretcher bars into a sturdy frame, ensuring that the corners are square, and the frame lies flat on the surface.
Next, lay your canvas face down on a clean, flat surface. Place the frame on top, aligning it so there is an even amount of canvas on all sides. Trim the canvas, leaving about 3" around the sides. This ensures enough canvas to pull to backside and staple giving the canvas a clean edge. Starting from the center of one side, use the canvas pliers to gently pull the fabric taut over the frame, securing it with a staple. Repeat this process on the opposite side, ensuring the canvas remains evenly stretched.
Continue working your way towards the corners, alternating sides to maintain even tension. When you reach the corners, fold them neatly and secure them with additional staples for a clean finish.
Finally, check the canvas for any wrinkles or loose areas, making adjustments as needed. And there you have it—a perfectly stretched canvas ready for your next masterpiece!
Where to purchase your tools and supplies?
Hobby Lobby, Michaels, Jerry's Artarama, Dick Blick carry many of the supplies and even some of the tools.
You can find a staple gun and staples at your local hardware store or purchase on Amazon. I've had plenty of manual staple guns. I loved the PowerShot and have had several. I now use an electric staple gun. Easier on my hands when I'm stretching several at a time for new work. Feel free to contact me with any questions. I'd be more than happy to help.
